Tranquil Plantations. Home stay in Wayanad, Western Ghats, Kerala.

One of the finest home stays in Kerala, Tranquil (They are selected as the best home stay in Kerala in 2005 by department of Tourism, Kerala State) is a private coffee and Vanilla plantation nestled in a picturesque 400 acres within the remote and lush rainforest of Wayanad in north of Kerala, India. If you are looking for a calm and quiet vacation within an environment of exquisite ecological beauty and unending relaxation, Tranquil Resort with just 8 rooms and a Luxury Treehouse is a home-stay experience like none other.

In the midst of a massive rain forest lies a little slice of plantation life for you to enjoy. For the discerning traveler, interested in eco-tourism with a unique flavour, Tranquil and its surroundings are unparalleled. Your hosts, Mrs.& Mr. Victor Dey create an ambience like no other where your every need is met. Indulge yourself in moments of lazy quiet or energize your mind and body with the inner workings of the daily business of coffee production. Not enough for you? Then take a tour through our specially created 40-acre vanilla bean plantation and learn the hidden secrets of this amazing plant that has become one of the most valuable and sought after commodities in the world market.

If you want a taste of the planter’s life, you can’t do better than staying as personal guests of plantation director Victor Dey and his wife Jini. From the minute you arrive in the lush gardens, ablaze with scarlet hibiscus, birds of paradise, potted geraniums and busy lizzies, you know you are in good hands. Greeted effusively by the Deys and their three dogs, you immediately feel like old friends – and indeed many guests have become just that. You stay in a plantation bungalow, with a deep veranda and comfy chairs, and take cocktails and fabulous meals on the terrace with the Deys.

There’s a sparkling pool, private eyries with hammocks and swing chairs, a games room and well-signed walks through the coffee bushes and up to mountain viewpoints. Tranquil’s trump card is the combination of efficient hotel standards with a relaxed, personal house -party ambience. The guest bungalow has six bedrooms, one at the back and five accessed from the shared veranda which runs the entire length of the building. There is one more guest bedroom in the Deys’ house plus an enormous deluxe room built for the owners of the plantation, who come up regularly from Bangalore.

The rooms, named after spices – Cardamom, Cloves, Cinnamon – have gleaming original woodwork, tiled floors, very comfortable twin beds (somewhere between a large single and a small double) and spacious modern bathrooms.  Rooms are spic and span. Snow-white towels are changed daily, sheets are changed every other day, and the veranda and paths are swept twice daily.

Tranquil well deserves its reputation of serving the best food in Kerala. When staying at hotels on a full board basis, you can soon tire of being presented with the same repertoire of Kerala specialities. But Jini makes each meal original, as well as plentiful and delicious, with every- thing homemade, down to the pickles. You dine at one big table on the terrace, beautifully laid with crisp napery (a new set at every meal) and decorated with hibiscus or jasmine.

Breakfast is a feast with tropical fruits, fresh juice, local vegetarian dishes and Western-style eggs, sausages, home-baked breads and jams. The lunch buffet offers a platter of cold meats and salads, plus a variety of hot dishes – a quiche or pasta, a succulent rogan josh (lamb curry), a couple of tasty vegetable concoctions, rice. No chance of going hungry here – if you go for an afternoon hike to the mountain viewpoint, tea – with little onion pakoras and blueberry tartlets – will be served at the top. Cocktails are taken chez the Deys, with soup served in a mug to herald the onset of dinner. Or you might be lucky enough to get Jini’s delicious tender coconut, chicken and corn broth, artily served in a green coconut shell. Puddings include chocolate torte and fresh mango soufflé.

The estate itself can easily keep you busy for two or three days. There are seven excellently signed walks, pitched at all levels, from ‘The Teaser’ to ‘Indiana Jones’ or ‘Braveheart’ – up through the coffee plants to the viewpoint rock at approximately 3,000 ft, where you can survey the misty plains way below.

The adventurous can then scramble up ‘Cliffhanger’ to Kuppamudi peak for a fabulous 360 degree view. You can do a plantation tour to check out how coffee and vanilla are grown and dried, bird watch, swim, or take an Ayurvedic massage. Because it’s an all inclusive and the food and house party ambience are so inviting, there’s zero incentive to find a restaurant elsewhere.
